The Police zet Arena op zijn kop...

The Police zette donderdagavond de Amsterdam Arena op zijn kop tijdens het eerste van de twee concerten die de band daar geeft. De Britse band is bezig met een reünietournee, die vier maanden geleden in Vancouver van start ging.

Vijftigduizend fans waren naar Amsterdam gekomen voor het concert van de band, die in 1985 na ruzies 'een pauze inlaste' en vervolgens nooit meer samenkwam. Het enthousiaste publiek zong meteen uit volle borst mee toen de band de eerste tonen inzette, die van 'Message in a bottle'.

Alle bekende en minder bekende hits van de band kwamen vervolgens voorbij, zoals 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic', 'De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da', 'Roxanne', 'Walking on the Moon', 'Can't Stand Losing You' en 'Every Breath You Take'.

Bassist en zanger Sting (55), gitarist Andy Sumners (64) en drummer Stewart Copeland (55) lieten horen nog weinig aan kwaliteit te hebben ingeboet. Vooral Copeland, die gekleed was in een wielrenshirt, zweetband en handschoentjes, genoot zichtbaar van het optreden in Amsterdam.

In het voorprogramma stond de Britse band Fiction Plane. Voorman van de band is Joe Sumner, de zoon van Sting. De gelijkenis met zijn vader is treffend. Qua stemgeluid en uiterlijk lijkt de 30-jarige Sumner sprekend zijn vader.

The Police geeft vrijdagavond een tweede concert in de Amsterdam Arena.
