The Police have been nominated for "Major Tour of the Year" by Pollstar (2007 Concert Industry Awards), which will be announced Thursday, February 7 at the Nokia Theatre in LA. Other nominees in the category include: Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Hannah Montana, Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder and Van Halen.
About the Pollstar Awards...
Every year since 1984, Pollstar has invited a small exclusive group of industry professionals to consider nominations in specific categories for the Pollstar Concert Industry Awards. In order for nominations to be considered for the ballot, at least two selections have to be made from the more than thirty individuals on the nominating committee. Nominations are voted on ballots provided to subscribers of Pollstar magazine in early December. Winners are then determined by votes from the international readership of Pollstar.
Some Pollstar Awards History...
From 1984 to 1988, Pollstar published the winners in a special edition of the magazine. 1984 winners included Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band for Major Tour of the Year and Tom Ross for Booking Agent of the Year.
In 1989, the Pollstar Concert Industry Awards were presented in the first official awards ceremony at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Winners included the Rolling Stones for Major Tour of the Year, Most Creative Stage Production and Concert Industry Event of the Year and Jeff Beck/Stevie Ray Vaughan as Most Creative Tour Package. Other winners included Radio City Music Hall for Best Indoor Concert Venue, Red Rocks Amphitheatre (Best Outdoor Concert Venue) and Bill Graham (Promoter of the Year).
Categories, Awards and Winners...
In the years since, the Pollstar Concert Industry Awards has evolved into a much-anticipated yearly event. Awards and categories have changed to honor colleagues, friends and repetitive winners. The Bill Graham Promoter of the Year honors the memory of the legendary promoter who revolutionized the concert industry. The Bobby Brooks Award for Agent of the Year honors the CAA agent who lost his life in the same 1990 helicopter crash that claimed the life of Stevie Ray Vaughan. In 1999, The Best Small Outdoor Concert Venue Award was renamed the Red Rocks Award to permanently reflect the many awards the outdoor venue has received.
Awesome Locations...
Historic moments and memorable locations have marked the Awards as notable landmarks such as the Wiltern Theatre, House of Blues, Universal Amphitheatre and Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles and Madison Square Garden in New York have hosted the annual event. The Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, CA was the site of the Pollstar Concert Industry Awards in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Last year, the Pollstar Awards was held at The Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles on February 8, 2007.
