Here's a review of the Sept. 14th show in Amsterdam from the perspective of someone who also saw them live in Oakland at the beginning of the tour:

Here's a personal review of their performance tonight in Amsterdam. I'm over here on business, and was lucky enough to score a ticket to tonight's show. It's about 1am as I'm writing this. I'm still dealing with the energy of the show. It was fantastic. So much better than Oakland on a lot of levels. Here are some ratings on a scale of 1-10:

Stage Show: 8
Much better than Oakland. I'd give Oakland a 5 or 6 in comparison. The guys working the cameras were better, and the switching was top notch. There were new graphics and elements added into the stage lighting, but not in a way that distracted from the show. And, they did away with the cheesy dinosaur during "walking in your footsteps" in favor of a better dino graphic.

Acoustics: 7
The acoustics in Oakland Colesiem were better by a bit. This was a covered soccer arena, and there was some echo. I was in a gen admission area on the field, and I was getting a lot of bounceback during the first 3 numbers. It seemed to clear up after that, though.

Sting's Singing: 9
MUCH improved from Oakland. He didn't go into that off-kilter, jazzy, compress-the-verse-into-2-seconds anywhere near as much during songs like "Every Little Thing She Does," and when he started, he stopped quickly. The look on his face was classic, too. It was almost like he was thinking "Oh, wait, this is a ROCK concert. I can't do that - the audience likes to sing along."

Sting's Basswork: 9
As good or better than Oakland.

Andy Summer's Guitar Work: 10
OMFG. ANDY WAS A ROCK GOD TONIGHT. In Oakland, he barely moved on stage, and his solos left me wondering, "what the @#$$ was that?" This show was an immediate difference, with Andy wrapping up "Message in a bottle" with a big high split-kick. He moved like he was 20 years younger. He took center stage on about 2/3rds the songs, with all-new solos in each of them. The mix was loud and clear, and his fingers were all over the guitar during solos. It sounded just amazing.

Stewart's Drumming: 9.5
This one is tough to compare, because I thought the drumming in Oakland was the only real high point. This was as good as Oakland. Stewart used more xylophone in some of the songs, and made the run from the percussion kit to the drum kit a few more times.

Band Chemistry: 8
This made a LOT of difference. Sting retired the old jokes, and got the crowd involved a lot more with singalongs. Sting and Andy were talking on stage to each other during songs. Sting and Andy played together, either facing each other, or Sting spooning Andy. Sting also let Andy take more of the center stage during solos, where Sting would work the right side of the stage. It worked really well. They felt like a BAND this time.

Crowd: 10
I f@#$$#@ moshed with a bunch of drunk Dutch guys for all the fast songs, pushing, shoving, and laughing the whole time. That really sums it up. We really went nuts for "Next to You" at the last finale. That's the way a rock show is supposed to be.
